Paul Elvstrøm was not only one of the most succesful sailors of all time – he was also a pioneer of the sport and namely as a sailmaker and engineer. He combined his ideas from racing all over the world into products and designs, which have defined sailing ever since.

Elvstrøm SailWear is here to honor Paul Elvstrøm’s many contributions to the world of sailing we all share today – to create clothing and activewear with the all-defining sailing twist. Keeping the clear inspiration from the sporting results and following products which made Paul Elvstrøm and his brand world-renowned is the centerpiece of everything we do.

Sailing inspired – and made for it

Paul Elvstrøm (1928-2016) began his journey to become a sailing great by being a very inspired young child. He grew up just outside Copenhagen – and importantly – with Øresund as his neighbor. Growing up in a place, where he could spend much of his childhood and youth on the water made sailing into his biggest passion.

From passion to medals

And when the young racer got his first shot on the big, international stage, it turned him into one of the youngest gold medalists at the games in 1948, and kicked off an impressive run of four consecutive wins at the games.  
Besides his success on the biggest stage in sailing, Elvstrøm also won several world championships in different classes throughout his career.

Making it a lasting success

He was known for his exceptional sailing skills, strategic thinking, and his special ability to adapt to various conditions. But it was not all sporting results and championship wins for Paul Elvstrøm. He was also a pioneer on the side of sailing, engineering, and design. He contributed significantly to the development of the equipment, and his innovative approaches and designs had a lasting impact on the sport.

His achievements and contributions to sailing earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including induction into the World Sailing Hall of Fame. 
Elvstrøm Sails celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2024, marking a milestone testament to seven decades of innovation, quality products and an unparalleled love for the sea.

Sails in our products

An important part of the journey with Elvstrøm SailWear is to upcycle and make alternative use of leftover materials or even used sails in general. Aside from our range of bags and storage, which are all made from surplus and cutoff materials from the production of sails, we have also experimented with products that incorporate used sails. The latest generation of these products are our Rimini54 sneakers, which have been crafted partially from a used set of Elvstrøm Sails.

United by Sailing

The legacy of Elvstrøm is not just about winning, but about a once-in-a-generation sailing icon whose remarkable results still unite and inspire sailors around the Globe today. At SailWear, we also feature a full range named United by Sailing. These elevate the story of the clothing to feature larger prints, namely a sketch of the boat in which Paul Elvstrøm took home the big result.
